Antonio Maffia

Ph.D. candidate

Born in Foggia, Italy, in 1985, he received his BSc and MSc degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Sannio, Italy, in 2009 and 2013, respectively. In 2014, he joined the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Basel, Switzerland, as PhD student. His current research interests include parallel computing, containers, web applications, accelerators, reproducibility, quantum computing.

Danilo Guerrera

Dr. des.

He received his Bachelor and Master in Computer Engineering in 2008 and 2012, respectively, from the Department of Engineering at the University of Sannio, Benevento, Italy.
He is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Basel, Switzerland, since 2018, where, as a member of the High Performance Computing (HPC) group, focuses on modeling, simulations, optimization, and scheduling techniques for large scale platforms.
During his Ph.D., under the guidance of Prof. Em. Helmar Burkhart, he conducted research in parallel and distributed computing, with focus on stencil codes and reproducible research. In 2017 he had an international collaboration with the FAU Erlangen-Nüernberg (Germany), where he worked as scientific researcher.
He is very interested in parallel architectures and performance optimization, and contributes to the teaching activities in the High Performance Computing course.

Helmar Burkhart

Professor Emeritus

Professor Emeritus in Computer Science at the University of Basel, which he joined in 1987. He received a diploma in Computer Science from the University of Stuttgart, Germany, and a PhD degree and Venia Legendi (Habilitation) from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich, Switzerland. He has held several positions such as President of the Swiss Informatics Society SI / Swiss Chapter of the ACM (1990–92), member of the expert group Swiss Priority Programme in Informatics Research (1991–96), and cofounder and board member of the SPEEDUP association. His research interests include parallel and distributed processing, web technologies, and e-learning.
